– What do we need from our “new home”?

Context of the relocation

The Pregnancy and Parents Centre (registered charity number SC032390) is a not-for-profit organisation, which supports expectant mothers, new parents and young families, irrespective of circumstances, background, sexual orientation, family makeup or beliefs. In the region of 400 people use our facilities each week. Many of our services, which include practical and emotional support in the lead up to and following childbirth, are free, and our sessions are run on a donation basis or a sliding scale of fees, so we never turn anyone away due to financial constraint.

We currently occupy a townhouse on Lower Gilmore Place, which has 110m2 of usable space (160m2 in total, including corridors and staircases).

We are looking for a premises, within a 10-15 minute walking radius of our current premises on the canalside (eg Tollcross, Gilmore Place, Polwarth, Viewforth, Gorgie, Dalry, Fountainbridge), which could be configured to allow for:

  • Ground floor access, with no steps or a ramp for access
  • Two large rooms for group activities
  • One or two smaller consulting rooms
  • One office space for three staff, potentially adjoining a reception space
  • Two toilets, at least one of which suitable for baby changing facilities / wheelchair access
  • Social space
  • Kitchen / food and drink preparation area
  • Ample space for storage (integral or assembled)
  • Indoor or potentially some secure outdoor space for pram parking
  • Ample natural light
  • Ideally situated over one floor to minimise need for stairs.
  • Space for our free resource library

The premises should be readily accessible by public transport connections and in a safe pedestrian area. Nearby parking is a bonus. Many visitors to the centre will have prams and pushchairs so we would prefer to avoid narrow pavements. The majority of our visitors and staff are female, some of whom are in vulnerable situations, and security is paramount. The Centre typically opens between 9am and 9.30pm weekdays, with shorter opening hours at weekends.

If you would like to visit the Centre in its current premises to understand more about how we use our space, please get in touch with premises@pregnancyandparents.org.uk.
