Pregnancy Yoga

Our Pregnancy Yoga sessions enable you to practice yoga safely in ways that support you physically and emotionally whether you are new to yoga or not. We include relaxation, discussion, suggested resources and opportunities to get to know other pregnant women as you prepare for the birth of your baby and new motherhood. Our groups are inclusive and welcoming whether it’s your first or subsequent pregnancy and you can join at any time during your pregnancy. The rooms are comfortable with lots of pillows, stools, yoga balls, blocks and mats. Our facilitators are experienced Pregnancy Yoga practitioners, have a wide knowledge of birth issues and local maternity services and are trained birth educators.

Our sessions are very popular, and we sometimes have a waiting list. Please register your details as soon as possible to ensure you have a space as soon as one becomes available.

FAQ

WHAT DOES PREGNANCY YOGA COVER?

The sessions include guided meditations, awareness of the breath, movements and postures. Some of the movements and postures are specifically designed to relieve common pregnancy-related symptoms and some of the movements might be used in labour and birth. The sessions conclude with facilitated discussions over tea and biscuits. Discussions are led by the interests and questions of the women in the group and cover a wide range of topics around pregnancy, birth and early parenthood.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS?

Pregnancy Yoga sessions aim to help women to feel safe and calm as they negotiate the sometimes emotional journey through pregnancy. They contribute to good overall health, reduce the stresses and strains of daily life, lessen anxiety, and increase knowledge about birth. You will have the opportunity to get to know and develop confidence in your own body, your inner resources and wisdom and connect with your baby. You might find that you sleep better, that your posture improves and that you find relief from common pregnancy symptoms such as backache, cramps, heartburn and swollen feet. Over the weeks women often develop a supportive social network that continues through the challenges of parenthood.

WHAT CAN I EXPECT?

The sessions at our Pleasance, Edinburgh centre usually begin with brief introductions followed by a meditation to encourage you to begin to let go of the tensions and busyness of the day. We then spend up to an hour on the postures, movements and resting meditation before stopping for a cup of tea, biscuits and discussion.
The postures and movements are more effective in loose clothing with bare feet, but you might need warm socks for the meditations.

WHAT'S THE COST?

We offer these sessions on a donation system, because as a not-for-profit charity we want our sessions to be accessible to all. We ask women to make a donation for six consecutive weeks at a time and to let us know when they wish to give up their space. At the end of pregnancy, you can donate in advance for one or two sessions only. The suggested donation for the six consecutive weeks is £77. If this is unaffordable for you, please let us know, as we have other suggested donations.

WHAT PEOPLE SAY ABOUT YOGA FOR PREGNANCY

Special thanks for the wealth of knowledge and support throughout my pregnancy, I learnt more from the yoga sessions than any book I could ever read. I don’t know what I would have done without the class, it gave me so much reassurance and guidance and I am very lucky to have had it on my doorstep.  You all do such an excellent job for all the lovely expecting mums!

The yoga classes were an important part of my pregnancy. Yoga and the discussions afterwards helped me maintain a relaxed approach throughout the pregnancy and gave me so much knowledge.

Our yoga teacher is wonderful at really listening to everyone who comes and alters the class accordingly. I don’t have any pregnant friends so simply being in a space and place where others are sharing the same experiences as I am is wonderfully reassuring.
